Nozomi: ticket, seat and baggage rules

Tokyo · Kyoto · Shin-Osaka · Hakata

30-second answer

What you need before boarding Nozomi

IC card alone?No

Stored value alone is not a Nozomi ticket. Purchase a Shinkansen product first; a linked IC card can then act as the gate key.

Additional ticket?Yes

You need a Shinkansen product covering the basic fare and limited-express portion.

Seat reservation?Conditional

Non-reserved cars normally exist, but all Nozomi seats are reserved on designated peak dates.

Bag reservation?Yes for 160–250 cm

Reserve a seat with an oversized-baggage area or compartment before boarding.

Why this catches travelers out

Nozomi uses the 160–250 cm advance-reservation rule. Hayabusa and Kagayaki do not use this baggage reservation system, even though all three are Shinkansen services.

Measure before booking

Add all three dimensions

Measure length + width + height. The total determines whether the Nozomi oversized-baggage reservation rule applies.

160 cm or less
ordinary storage
Over 160–250 cm
reserve baggage seat
Over 250 cm
not allowed

Smaller bags normally use the overhead rack or foot space. The dedicated oversized area or compartment is tied to the applicable reserved seat.

Do not want to carry it?

Check storage at your station

If the bag is impractical to take onboard, use the separate station guide to check lockers and verified luggage-storage alternatives.
